PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Las Memorias de Mi Cocina was choreographed and filmed but Ruby Morales. It is a site-specific dance film featured inside the series Stories From Home: COVID-19 Addendum which was curated, produced, and artistically directed by Tucson based artist, Yvonne Montoya. Las Memorias de Mi Cocina conjures up Ruby’s memories of her and her family surrounding cooking, laughing, loving, divorce, pain, letting go, and the many stages of her life that are attached to that very physical kitchen she grew up in and that she came back to during the COVID-19 Pandemic. While those memories are missed and there is a clear sense of grief, this piece also shows the presence of love and sweetness. Ruby embodies these memories and their essence as she dances in her childhood kitchen and releases them into the world.

The larger work, Stories From Home: COVID-19 Addendum, “…is an evolution of and supplement to the full-length Stories From Home work, integrating new choreography and ideas. This online series presentation is divided among two acts. The first act encompasses five dance films, performed by [Yvonne] Montoya and her son Buddy, that reflect upon the challenges of homeschooling and parenting while working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second act features the cast of Stories From Home in five dance films that feature the dancers’ stories from home during the time of COVID-19.” (www.yvonnemontoya.co/projects)
